  • “I am SO glad I signed up. The amount of information and practice we were able to fit into two days was awesome. The really small group size made it feel like a very tailored course and it felt like every base was being covered and there was actually time for questions and conversation. The experience was nothing short of awesome, as always.

You are the most welcoming presence I have met in this industry and that is so vital because I have not once hesitated to ask a question or be vulnerable.

Similar to any other experience I've had with you as a guide, while it's frustrating to usually not have a black and white answer, the understanding of why so many answers are "it depends" is actually very empowering. I think you really teach us how to be self-sufficient but also have so much more clarity of where our true weak points in our toolbox are. With the toolbox mindset and recognition of such high degree of nuance, creativity plays a big factor in how to respond to different situations. But to be both creative, safe, and efficient, you have to be willing to dedicate the time to building your skillset and practice problem solving. So as far as teaching the tool box, wow. It's amazing and so effective.

I think we had a great blend of practicing each component individually and as a whole system.”

Audrey Barber, Crevasse Rescue Course 2024

  • “This was really valuable to do a year after the Park Glacier training because it gave me the opportunity to focus solely on these skills, preparing for these skills, practicing them, etc. Again, I think you get out what you put in, so if you’re coming to this course without really understanding the application, the concepts, knowing basics, etc. it’s lost. Two focused days following some time focusing on preparing for the course and then giving thought to what you’ve just learned - ideal.

Julz is really conscious of students’ expressed views on teaching. Do you want to hear feedback in real time or when you’re done? That kind of thing. Good feel for when to intervene and instruct vs. let it go.”

Ted Debonis, Crevasse Rescue Course 2024

  • “It was excellent. I’m really glad we practiced self arrest and repelling/ascending a rope - that was memorable! The video of your demonstration is a valuable thing to be walking away with - it makes the process look so simple and attainable with practice. I’m glad that I signed up and I’ll be taking it again, next year!”

Aimee Bonnain, Crevasse Rescue Course 2024

  • “A fully encompassing trip due to being a renewed newbie to snow camping and Ski Mo. 25+ years ago I ventured into it these types of trips without specific training and a lot of trust in other stronger experienced individuals. This course has provided me the context, the experience, the skills, and the confidence to take on more of the same in the future and I'm so stoked that I signed up. Every part of it was memorable- the uphill challenge, the howling winds, the mtn vistas, the acquired skills, and the new found friendships -never to be forgotten!”

Lesley Gifford, Ski Mountaineering Expedition 2024

  • “I'm so glad I signed up for this program! More than anything, I felt like I left the course confident in my ability to go out and try the skills we learned (obviously with a lot of space for growth!). I think the group size, repetition of content, and hands on learning all added to this. “

Erin Villareal, Ski Mountaineering Expedition 2023

  • “Wow, how do you put this into words. There were times when I was almost overwhelmed by the experience (in a positive way) and consciously thought about how I could retain my memory of it. You’ll do all the things that you anticipate: learn skills, climb and ski in amazing places, live in and appreciate a beautiful environment. It’s really what Julz herself offers and the atmosphere she supports that make the experience special. Our group really quickly bonded over our shared challenge and adventure and that made the climbing and skiing even better.

I went into the program thinking that it would be an incredible experience, and it was. We learned skills necessary to experience the terrain competently. We developed quickly bonded over a shared experience and developed a supportive, fun community. We experienced and appreciated the the space we were in and its range of moods. We pushed ourselves physically and enjoyed the reward of that challenge. Really a great experience and I’m grateful as always to Julz.

Julz puts so much thought and care into the courses/programs/experiences she guides. It’s much more than a simple objective attempt. I always leave a course or experience guided by Julz being a little better. I have better skills in a certain area. I have better awareness of my place in and contribution to a community. I have had a shared experience more valuable than summiting a certain peak or skiing a certain line. It’s always a truly holistic experience that I cling to until the next time. I’m really grateful for Julz’s ability to provide that opportunity.”

Ted Debonis, Ski Mountaineering Expedition 2023

  • “Julz did such a good job at making all feel welcome and it was awesome learning crevasse rescue again and seeing the way she made the instruction digestible in segments with hands on learning. It is so much material to cover and she made it feel really approachable and easy to put into practice.”
