Backcountry Ski

Winter/Spring Programs

ā€œI've been lucky in life to have great friends, but never ones that I've shared my obsessive love of the outdoors and winter with, particularly any female friends. In fact, most people often think I'm crazy for what I spend my free time and finances doing. This course, you ladies, and the others I've met through you have changed that for me, going beyond recreational and resort skiing and truly getting to bask in the absolute awe of the place we get to live. The more time I spend out there the more I want to explore, go farther, do multi-days, plan hut trips, climb mountains, drink it all in. I feel the reflection of that part of my soul when I am around women like you, that sense of wonder that we should never let disappear, and for that I am forever grateful.ā€

- Alicia Andras, Womenā€™s Mentorship Program 2023

For anyone looking to apply their avalanche knowledge in a real-time decision making context.

On this course, there are no lectures. Education will come from what arises in the present moment, with the current conditions, and alongside the decision making process in each group. Each course meets twice a month, for a total of 6 times throughout the season, to foster a deepening of community, and a safe container to explore your voice as a leader in the backcountry.

Curriculum will focus on building run lists from scratch, forecasting avalanche hazard outside of the published forecast, navigating using map, compass, and technology to access terrain, and real-time decision making in the field.

As with all Grounding Truth courses, there is an emphasis on building community ā€” made even more sweet since we will be staying in a hut, sharing meals, and relaxing in a barrel sauna. Did I mention thereā€™s a sauna?
